At approximately 7:00 am on 6-13-20 I received a call from a very upset woman that was visiting friends in Pennsylvania whose dog, Dutch, had fallen 75’ into an 18 wide” pipe. Last night while throwing a stick in a pond for her dog to retrieve, the dog had been sucked in to the 18” overflow pipe. The dog, a large black lab, was now stuck in the elbow of the pipe which led to a steep ravine. Several fire departments had responded the previous night and were unable get the dog out. By 7:00 am, the dog had been in the pipe for 12 hours and was cold and wet, and it was unknown if he was injured. The owner asked if our company, O’Brien’s Confined Space Rescue Services, could come and rescue her dog by entering the 18” horizontal pipe because the dog was located via a pipe camera 200 feet away from the pipe entrance. I asked if she could send me some photos so I could evaluate the situation. I explained that it would be very difficult to accomplish this task, and if anyone on our team felt the task was unsafe, the rescue attempt would be abandoned. Our company team consisted of Travis & Tracy Sandford, Gary O’Brien and Carri Tucker. We all arrived on scene at approximately 1:30 PM. A rescue plan was developed to include every safety precaution possible. Team Leader Travis Sandford gave the ‘go sign’, and Carri Tucker, equipped with a retrieval harness, entered the 18” horizontal pipe. With Travis’ guidance, Carri began the long, slow crawl towards the location of the dog 200 feet away. Once she reached Dutch, she had to reorient his body so that she could guide him the 200 feet out of the pipe. After he was correctly positioned, she attached a rope to the dog and gave Travis the order to begin pulling them both out. They emerged about ten minutes later to the delight of all bystanders. Dutch appeared tired and stiff but walked up the side of steep the ravine under his own power into the waiting arms of his owner. As pet owners and animal lovers, our employees refused to accept any payment for their work, so Dutch and his owner were not charged for the rescue.
